Tanzania’s Licensing Round Back on the Books

Thursday, May 16, 2013

Tanzania’s state-run oil and gas firm, Tanzania Petroleum Development Corp. (TPDC), has announced the official date for the launch of its 4th Tanzania Deep Offshore and North Lake Tanganyika Licensing Round 2013. The official launch of the licensing round is now October 25 during the 2nd Tanzania Oil & Gas Conference and Exhibition.

The licensing round, originally scheduled for September 2012, was delayed until after the government presented its Natural Gas Policy to the parliament in October 2012.

The conference will take place at the Mwalimu Nyerere International Conference Center in Dar es Salaam. The bid round will close on May 15, 2014.

The 2013 licensing round will include deep offshore blocks in sedimentary basins comprising of seven deep-sea blocks; Block 4/2A, Block4/3A, Block 4/3B, Block4 /4A, Block 4/4B, Block 4/5A, and Block 4/5B. The deep-sea blocks are located in water depths ranging between 2,000 meters to 3,000 meters. The North Lake Tanganyika Block is located offshore in the western arm of the East African Rift System.

Two additional blocks, deep offshore Blocks 4/1B and 4/1C, have been reserved for government where TPDC will be allowed to execute a different exploration approach using a strategic partner to be competitively sourced. The deep offshore blocks have good coverage of modern regional 2D seismic data which can be viewed through ION GX Technology and WesternGeco.

Lake Tanganyika, the world’s longest and second-deepest lake, is covered by sparse 2D seismic data which were collected in the 1980s during the African Lakes Drilling Project. The data and copy of report is available at TPDC.
