Tanzania’s President Wants LNG Fast Tracked

Tuesday, August 23, 2016

President John Magufuli of Tanzania has issued an order to speed up the development of the planned natural gas export scheme. The president told officials on August 22 to speed up work on the LNG facility that will be used to monetize the sizable gas reserves discovered off the East African country’s coast. According to Magufuli the implementation of the project is taking too long.

The two partnerships of BG Group/Ophir Energy and Statoil/ExxonMobil plan to build a LNG export terminal in partnership with the state-run TPDC by the early 2020s. Part of the delay in implementing the project could be that Shell recently acquired BG and may be getting all its ducks in a row before getting down to business.

Another hold up in taking a FID on the project could be laid at the feet of the government as issues have slowed down the finalization with the acquisition of land at the site and establishing a legal framework for the hydrocarbon industry.

“I want to see this plant being built, we are taking too long. Sort out all the remaining issues so investors can start construction work immediately,” the presidency quoted Magufuli as saying in a statement.

The president’s office said Magufuli issued the instructions for the LNG project to be fast-tracked during talks with Oystein Michelsen, Statoil’s Tanzania country manager, and senior Tanzanian government energy officials.
