Nairobi suffered from a four-day siege by Islamist militants from Somalia leaving 67 people dead at last count although teams continue to search the Westgate shopping complex for unrecovered bodies. The country is continuing three days of official mourning for both civilian and military victims of the attack.
US, UK, German, Canadian, and Interpol experts are teaming with Kenyan investigators to search for DNA, fingerprints, and ballistic evidence. The interior minister Joseph Ole Lenku confirmed that five militants were dead. So far, 10 people have been detained in connection with the attack that Somali Islamist group Al Shabab has taken credit for.
Al Shabab claims the action is in retaliation for Kenya’s army involvement in operations in Somalia. The militants stormed the Westgate shopping center on September 21 firing at shoppers and mall employees.
