Total Mulls Tanzanian Route for Ugandan Flows

Thursday, September 17, 2015

Despite the fact the governments of Kenya and Uganda have agreed on a route to export Ugandan and Kenyan oil, Total, one of the soon to be producers in Uganda, said it is considering a pipeline through Tanzania as a possible export route.

The route officially chosen by Kenya and Uganda in August through the north of Kenya to the Lamu coast has raised some security concerns as it lies near the Somalia border and could be subject to Islamist attacks.

There are a couple alternatives to the pipeline that ends at the Lamu coast, one being further south in Kenya to the port at Mombasa, while another would be to by-pass Kenya altogether running through Uganda to Tanzania.

“We’re exploring all technically and economically viable options and Tanzania is among those options,” Total Uganda spokeswoman Ahlem Friga-Noy was cited as saying in a Reuters report. She said the Tanzania route extended from Uganda’s western town of Hoima to Tanga on Tanzania’s coast.

While the Tanzania route might be safer it would cut one of Total’s partners in Uganda Tullow Oil and its partner Africa Oil Corp. out of the loop when it comes to their Kenyan production.
