Tullow Announces Success with Ebony-1 in Ghana

Thursday, November 20, 2008

Tullow Oil plc has announced more success in its Ghanian ventures. The company said that the Ebony-1 exploration well has intersected two hydrocarbon-bearing intervals in Late Cretaceous turbidite sands.

The well, located in the Shallow Water Tano license 30 km offshore Ghana, spudded on October 22 using Seadrill’s West Ceres jackup rig, and reached a total depth of 2,640 meters. Successful logging and sampling operations have confirmed a four meter oil bearing interval at 2,053 meters and a two-meter high pressure gas condensate interval at 2,570 meters.

The data collected indicate there is a potential connection between these pinched-out sands and the material down-dip Tweneboa oil prospect. Other interpretations may not be excluded, but the company said the findings will be further evaluated.

The Ebony prospect, composed of stacked submarine fans, is a similar type of play as the recent major discoveries, Jubilee and Odum made by Tullow and Kosmos in the West Cape Three Point Block and Deepwater Tano Block to the south and southeast of the Ebony prospect.

CEO Aidan Heavey said, “The current interpretation of the Ebony-1 result is extremely encouraging as it further de-risks the regional prospectivity and improves our overall understanding of the hydrocarbon distribution in the basin. This has potentially positive implications for the Tweneboa stratigraphic trap prospect, which is scheduled for drilling in the Q1 of 2009.”

Tullow Oil is the operator of the Shallow Water Tano license with an interest of 31.5%.  Other partners include InterOil, Thani Ghana, Sabre Oil, and the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC).
