Tunisian Military Fires Teargas at Protesters

Tuesday, May 23, 2017

On May 21 Tunisian security forces fired tear gas into a crowd of protesters trying to take over a gas pumping station. While the protests have been going on for some time, the unrest has now escalated into violence.

The protesters were warned the day prior that force would be used to protect and retake oil facilities.

Protesters briefly forced the closure of the Vana pumping station after the army allowed an engineer to shut it to avoid a confrontation, according to a Reuters report. Clashes ensued at Vana when the military took back control to restart the pump, two witnesses said.

Protesters are demanding jobs and a share of the wealth earned from oil and gas production.
