Tunnels Destroyed to Combat Smuggling in Sinai

Friday, July 19, 2013

On July 14 Egypt’s military sent units from the armed forces engineering brigade to destroy a number of tunnels leading into the Gaza Strip from Egypt, which were reportedly used to smuggle gasoline and diesel fuel supplies.

A number of pumps used to siphon off fuel and help smuggle it across the border into Gaza were found.

The military plans to continue this campaign for the foreseeable future in an effort to combat smuggling, as this is leading to fuel shortages for the residents of North Sinai.
