Turkey Warns Haftar, Battle for Libya Heats Up

Friday, May 22, 2020

Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman Hami Aksoy has warned General Khalifa Haftar and his opposition Libyan National Army (LNA) forces that there will be consequences should they target Turkish interests in the North African country. “In the event Turkish interests in Libya are targeted, this will have very grave consequences,” Aksoy said on Thursday.

Askoy’s comments came after the LNA allegedly vowed to target Turkish positions with an air campaign. Haftar denied the threat had been made.

Turkey has been providing military support to the internationally recognized Government of National Accord (GNA) in Libya, in its year’s long battle against Haftar’s LNA who have repeatedly tried to take control of Tripoli, the capital city.

Libya’s oil infrastructure has oft been crippled because of the ongoing fight and combined with the oil price crash and the Covid pandemic, oil production has been stagnant and much needed foreign revenue has ground to a near halt.
