Two US citizens were kidnapped off an oil supply vessel on October 23 off the coast of Nigeria. Captain and chief engineer of the US C-Retriever were taken on October 23 by armed men near Bayelsa state’s Brass. Eleven other members of the crew were reportedly released.
US State Department Deputy Spokeswoman Marie Harf Wednesday’s incident was being treated as “an act of piracy” rather than terrorism.White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters: “We are concerned by the disturbing increase in the incidence of maritime crime, including incidents of piracy off the coast of West Africa, specifically in the Gulf of Guinea.”
The C-Retriever, owned by US marine transport group Edison Chouest Offshore, security firm AKE and two security sources said in a Reuters report.
The US State Department and FBI were leading the American response to the incident.
