Uganda Issues Production Licenses to Total and Tullow

Thursday, September 1, 2016

Total and Tullow Oil have finally been granted production licenses for their holdings in Uganda. The government granted the pair eight production licenses covering Exploration Area 1 operated by Total and Exploration Area 2 operated by Tullow.

Energy Minister Irene Muloni told reporters the granting of the licenses followed a protracted period of negotiations. She said that since the licenses were granted it was “now time for the serious work to start”.

Three of the licenses were issued to Total while five were issued to Tullow. The licenses are valid for 25 years and can be renewed for an additional five years.

The two firms are required to take their respective FIDs within 18 months of receiving the production licenses. Commercial oil production in Uganda is expected to start in 2020, well over a decade after the first oil discoveries were made.
