Uganda Plans Refinery for 2016/2017

Friday, June 21, 2013

East Africa should have a new refinery by 2016/2017 if things in Uganda go as planned. The government of Uganda said that its 30,000 bpd refinery should be up and running by 2016/2017 and two years later it should double its capacity.

Companies operating in Uganda have discovered significant amount of reserves, however disagreements over taxes and the viability of a refinery in Uganda have held back production of these reserves.

“The first phase of 30 000 barrels of oil per day refinery is expected to be operational in 2016/17, with expansion to 60 000 barrels two years later,” Fred Kabanda, principal geologist at Uganda’s petroleum exploration and production department, told attendees at an industry event on East Africa being held in Nairobi.
