UK Court to Hear Nigerian Appeal

Tuesday, July 30, 2019

A court in the UK has agreed to hear an appeal filed by Nigerian communities to pursue claims in the UK against Royal Dutch Shell over oil spills in the Niger Delta.

According to lawyers representing the Nigerians, the case should be heard in a UK court because the oil company is headquartered in London and is legally responsible for the environmental failures of its subsidiary.

The subsidiary maintains the spills are chiefly due to oil theft, sabotage and illegal refining.
