UN Sponsored Libya Talks Already in Trouble

Wednesday, January 14, 2015

The UN sponsored talks between Libya’s warring factions has hit a snag before they have even begun. According to a Reuters report citing the spokesman for the Tripoli legislature, Omar Hmaidan, the legislature has postponed taking a decision on whether it will be attending. Apparently the Tripoli government, which is not internationally recognized as the government of Libya, is concerned over how the negotiations were organized.

“We do not reject dialogue, but we believe that the UN rushed to determine the date of the dialogue and its mechanisms,” said Hmaidan. “We have decided to postpone the vote to participate or not to next Sunday.”

The decision from Tripoli appeared to push back the chance of any meaningful talks between the two sides.

“The UN office at Geneva is still planning on hosting the talks that have been announced, but cannot confirm at this stage exactly when they will start,” said UN spokeswoman Corinne Momal-Vanian.

Coming in with a complete opposite stance is the internationally recognized government who is said to already have representatives in Tunisia waiting to fly to Geneva.
