Troops loyal to Libya’s unity government plan to take the fight to Daesh militants in the country. According to reports government troops will encircle Sirte, the militant stronghold.
Government troops are said to be closer to Sirte than they have been in almost a year, about 10 miles from the city center.
Military spokesman Mohamed al-Gasri said in a Reuters report that after advancing along the road west of Sirte on May 27, government-backed forces were seeking full control of a steam plant about 15 km from central Sirte, as well as a road leading south from Sirte to Waddan.
“The next step is to encircle Sirte, and then we will ask the residents to try to leave,” he said. “We don’t want to enter now because of the residents. But if it becomes a battlefield we can enter within hours.”
Government troops pulled out of Sirte about a year ago, however this time Gasri said there would be no repeat of last year’s withdrawal. “This time it’s different because there is an internationally recognized government that has pledged to support the army to fight Daesh (Islamic State),” he was quoted as saying in a Reuters report.
