Three oil workers in Nigeria were kidnapped by suspected Boko Haram militants. The unknown militants released a video on July 29 showing the three workers from an exploration team in northeast Nigeria.
The workers were kidnapped on July 25. The three men were from the University of Maiduguri and were working with state-run oil and gas firm NNPC.
The Nigerian military attempted a rescue on July 26, unfortunately the rescue not only failed but led to the death of at least 37 members of the original exploration team and the rescuers, including Nigerian military and armed vigilantes, according to officials and military sources.
According to a Reuters report, the men appeared to be unharmed in the video and were sitting crosslegged on a red floor in front of a patterned wall. The video was obtained by Sahara Reporters, a US-based journalism website.
“I want to advise that the use of excessive force is not the solution. We want to call on the federal government to meet this demand and, as promised, they will release us immediately,” said one of the men, who identified himself as a lecturer at the university.
