The West Africa Gas Pipeline Co., (WAPCO) has suspended shipments of gas to Ghana due to a delinquent bill. The government of Ghana, through its state-run power producer Volta River Authority, owes Nigeria’s N-Gas an estimated $180 million; N-Gas in turn owes WAPCO $104 million.
WAPCO spokeswoman Harriet Wereko-Brobby was quoted by Reuters as saying that this was the first time the pipeline had been closed due to non-payment.
While only a small portion of Ghana’s energy needs are met through gas from Nigeria, the suspension could deepen the country’s capacity issues given the low water levels at its two main hydropower plants.
