Work to remove a capsized drilling rig lying in shallow waters off Angola where its LNG plant is located are due to start in Q2. The capsize of Saipem’s Perro Negro 6 occurred in mid-2013 during efforts to bore a tunnel below an underwater canyon for a gas pipeline that would feed the liquefaction facility.
Saipem awarded the salvage operation to an as-yet unidentified firm. A company spokesman said operations will commence once the proper approvals have been received from authorities.
The sinking of the Perro Negro 6 took place while it was working for Chevron. It led to the death of one person and shut in feed gas to the LNG facility from Chevron-operated Blocks 0 and 14.
