Workers Protest Outside ExxonMobil in Nigeria

Sunday, December 18, 2016

ExxonMobil workers in Nigeria are in the midst of a protest outside the company’s operations in Logos state. The protest is in response to the US company’s plans to let go more than 100 Nigerian workers and to close its office.

Nigeria’s oil workers’ union, PENGASSAN, said it plans to withdraw its services from all ExxonMobil operations in the country. The union accused the firm of flagrant violation of the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Content Development (NOGICD) Act of 2010, by deploying expatriates to take over jobs for which there is local capacity.

PENGASSAN, in a statement issued on December 14, said “the plan is to withdraw our services totally from all our operating locations by midday tomorrow (December 15). The secretariat will keep you informed and updated as we arrive at that threshold. Injury to one is an injury to all!”
