ExxonMobil workers in Nigeria began picketing outside the US supermajor’s installations in the Niger Delta. The workers, part of Nigerian union PENGASSAN, began picketing on May 9.
According to reports the workers began a gradual withdrawal from their work sites at Mobil Producing Nigeria facilities across the Niger Delta. Addressing the workers during the picketing of an ExxonMobil office in Lagos last Wednesday, the PENGASSAN Lagos Zonal Chairman, Comrade Abel Agarin, said that there has been gradual shutting down of the plants in Mobil locations all over the country.
The strikes are in protest to oil companies firing workers over the past few months. Agarin confirmed that his workers were on strike in protest at the sacking of 150 workers in December. He said 82 were PENGASSAN members.
“We want them to be brought back and if that is not possible we want a proper severance package for them,” said Agarin.
The Nigerian government is expected to mediate between the worker’s union and ExxonMobil this week.
