Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari commissioned the 650,000 barrel per day Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals today in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos. Further, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corp. (NNPC) announced it will take a 20% stake in the world’s largest single-train refinery.
The Dangote complex is positioned over an area of approximately 2,635 hectares and is powered by a 435-MW power plant. The complex also includes a 900 KTPA Polypropylene plant.
The feedstock will be 100% Nigerian crude and at full capacity can meet Nigeria’s domestic refined product demand with additional products available for export. Diesel and gasoline from the refinery will conform to Euro V specifications.
To support the project, over 900 young engineers were trained in refinery operations abroad. Mechanical Engineers were trained at the GE University in Italy while Process Engineers were trained by Honeywell/Universal Oil Products (UOP) for six months.
“The Dangote Refinery with the new deal that we have been building, supported by the enabling Petroleum Industry Act, will surely provide domestic security of supply in our country. The lingering challenges of petroleum subsidies is clearly getting out of the capacity of the state to bear and the differentials that domestic refining will provide is insignificant and cannot compensate for the subsidies,” stated Group CEO of NNPC Mallam Mele Kyari by Tweet.
Meanwhile, Sanjay Gupta, CEO of Dangote Refinery and Petrochemicals stated, “Everything in this plant by way of size is the first. It is the largest single-train refinery in the world. There is no single column which can process 650,000 barrels per day anywhere else.”
