Its official, ExxonMobil CEO Rex Tillerson is President-elect Donald Trump’s choice for secretary of state, beating out a number of tried and true ‘politicos’ for the US’ top political spot in Trump’s cabinet.
While Tillerson has a host of experience negotiating deals around the globe, it is that experience that have members of both parties questioning his suitablilty. The ExxonMobil CEO has close ties to Russia, with the firm having more than a few JVs in the country. He also has close ties to Vladmir Putin, who awarded him with a Russian state honor, the Order of Friendship, in 2013.
Tillerson will have to go through senate confirmation hearings before the appointment is official.
Some in the US government have praised Trump’s choices as “pretty impressive”, others are not so inspired by the choice. Senator Charles Schumer, the incoming Senate Democratic leader, told the CBS network show “This Morning” that “the bottom line is, every one of these nominees, particularly a guy like Tillerson, needs a thorough, thorough hearing.”
“Talks about his closeness with Putin will come forward,” Schumer said.
Trump’s choice for Tillerson’s deputy, John Bolton, is causing some concern on both sides of the aisle also with Republican Senator Rand Paul saying he would stop Bolton from being confirmed to any administration post.
