Zambia set the date for its new presidential and parliamentary elections for August 11. The election date was set by the new constitution; previously the election date was set by the president. The amended constitution is expected to be ratified January 5 and the election date of August 11 will be official once President Edgar Lungu ratifies the amendment.
Other amendments to Zambia’s constitution included a clause requiring a winning presidential candidate to get more than 50% of the valid votes cast, a presidential spokesman told Reuters.
It was also revealed that the country’s president, Edgar Lungu, reversed a decision to increase electricity tariffs. A spokesman for the president said the increase would only end up hurting the poor.
