With nearly half the votes counted in Zambia’s presidential election, reports have the incumbent, Edgar Lungu, maintaining a slim lead over his main rival Hakainde Hichilema.
According to reports out of the country, Lungu led with 669,960 votes against Hichilema’s 644,132 after 69 of the country’s 156 constituencies in Thursday’s vote had been counted.
The parties of both candidates are claiming victory, although to win the candidates need to receive more than 50% of the vote or there will be a second round of voting.
While the official count was expected to be released on August 14, the electoral commission has pushed back the timeframe without giving an exact date for the results.
