Zueitina Restart Delayed

Tuesday, April 22, 2014

The restart of oil exports from Libya’s eastern port of Zueitina has hit a technical snag. The port was expected to be the first to reopen under a deal reached between the government and protesters, however some damage due to the long closure at Zueitina will delay its reopening.

Under the government’s plans the Zueitina, along with the Hariga ports would open immediately, followed by the ports at Ras Lanuf and Es Sider within a month. Due to the damage at Zueitina But justice minister Salah al-Merghani said Hariga port in the far east would be the only one to start operations. “There is some damage (at Zueitina port) due to the long closure,” Merghani told a televised news conference.

“Talks to reopen Ras Lanuf and Es Sider will only start after Zueitina has reopened,” he said.

He also added that the government planned to form a committee to investigate claims of corruption in the oil sector; which is one of the demands from the rebels.
