Libyan Rebels Unhappy With New PM

Thursday, May 8, 2014

Rebels in Libya’s eastern region are apparently not happy with who the parliament has selected as the country’s new prime minister and have stated they will not deal with him. The rebels are currently occupying oil ports in eastern Libya and prior to the new prime minister, Ahmed Maiteeq, being elected a deal was in place between his predecessor Abdullah al Thinni and the rebels to reopen four ports.

The deal has resulted in two of the four ports reopening but getting the other two ports open, the Ras Lanuf and Es Sider, which are the region’s larger ports could be more of a struggle under Maiteeq. Both sides had agreed to hold further talks but rebel comments on the talks being fruitful don’t offer much hope.  “We refuse to deal with Ahmed Maiteeq … Maiteeq came to power illegally,” rebel spokesman Ali Hasi said.

The election process for Libya’s prime minister was interrupted when gunman broke in and wounded several members of parliament.
