Seven more soldiers have died in clashes with ISIS militants in Libya. The latest deaths took place when the soldiers were repelling an attack on their post near Benghazi.
The soldiers who died were part of the Libyan National Army (LNA), which supports the internationally recognized government. The LNA was trying to prevent fighters loyal to ISIS from capturing tanks in the town of Annawaghia.
Benghazi is one front in Libya’s complex conflict involving two rival governments, their allied armed factions, and Islamist militants who have gained a foothold in the chaos that prevails four years after the fall of Muammar Gaddafi.
“The forces of the Libyan National Army confronted the militants early this morning and forced them to withdraw,” a military source was quoted by Reuters as saying.
This follows the reports of four soldiers dead in clashes outside Derna.
